Puzzle 214 : Snake Rows

This is a new variation on snake.Such a twist can be used on several puzzles,I had done this on tapa, for example.

Rules: Shade some cells to form a snake 1-cell wide, which does not touch itself even diagonally.Clues outside indicate the number of shaded cell rows in that direction.Rows in every clued direction are all of different lengths.

Puzzle 213: Statue Park

This is a Statue Park. This puzzle uses the full set of 12 pentominos.

Puzzle 212: Handicapped Guards

This is a new puzzle type.I constructed two puzzles of this type, one in august and an easier one this week, which you can see in this post.

Rules:Clues represent guards. Some buildings - rectangles 2x2 or larger- are hidden in the grid.Buildings cannot occupy the clue cells.Buildings do not touch each other even diagonally. Guards can see all the cells that are not blocked by buildings.Guards themselves do not block other guards's view. Not all guards watch in all directions. Some guards watch in 1 direction only, some in 2,some in 3 and some in all four. The small numbers indicate how many directions the guard is watching.Determining which directions a guard is watching, is part of the solve. Number in big font is the total of all cells that the guard can see(not including the cell with the clue).

Puzzle 210: Islands in scrabble

I believe this is a new variation. If someone has seen it before, please let me know.

Rules:Some islands are hidden in the grid. Each given clue represents an island containing that number of cells.Every island contains exactly one clue cell.Shade some cells such that all islands are revealed.all shaded cells must be connected orthogonally, and cannot form 2x2 squares. Then, build a regular crossword using all the shaded cells. All the given words should be read exactly once, either top to bottom or left to right.

Puzzle 206: Touchy Fillomino

This is a touchy fillomino.

Puzzle 205: Embedded Polyominos

This is a fillomino/LITS hybrid.
Rules: Follow regular fillomino rules. Then shade in a tetromino in every polyomino of area 4 or larger. All tetrominos should be interconnected to form a single polyomino without any 2x2 areas. Two identical terominos cannot touch through their sides.

Fillomino/Battleships

This is a new fillomino variation, combining battleships with fillomino. For the first puzzle,I used standard clues for the battleships, without any given ship segments.Next time, I will try using only ships segments.Should be more interesting that way.

Rules:Place the complete standard fleet of ten battleships, without touching even diagonally.Ships cannot be placed on numbers. Then fill the rest of the grid with numbers, following regular fillomino rules.Hints outside indicate the number of cells occupied by ships.

Operator Magic

This is one of my variations on Kenken.

Rules:Place a digit from 1 to n in each cell of the nxn square, such that every row and column contains each different digit exactly once. Some operators (subtraction or division) are given, but the results are not.The result of each operation on all the digits inside the cage that it belongs to, should be a positive non-zero integral value.Digits in a cage can repeat. The operations are evaluated starting from the largest digit through to the smallest.

Proportionate Tapa

Rules: Every outlined region has two or more blocks of shaded cells.Difference between sizes of the largest and smallest block of shaded cells in every region is the same.

Lines or Mines

I always like Four winds. This variation is a hybrid between minesweeper and four winds.

Rules: Locate some mines in the white cells, one in each cell. Then draw one or more lines from some of the numbers horizontally or vertically in different directions, the number indicating the total length of all the lines that start in that number.Every clue indicates either the number of mines around it,or the lengths of lines, but not both.Lines cannot intersect or overlap other lines or mines.

Minmax Tapa

Rules: Follow regular tapa rules.Additionally, numbers outside indicate the difference between the lengths of the longest and shortest block of shaded cellls in that row/column.

Sigma Fillomino

Rules:Fill in numbers using regular fillomino rules.Numbers on some grid nodes indicate the total area of all the polyminos that touch that node.

Paint by Minesweeper

This is a new puzzle type.I would like to see what others think about it. Rules: Shade some cells such that all shaded cells form a single polyomino with no 2x2 squares.Every clue is made of two digits, one gives the quantity of edge-adjacent shaded cells ,and the other ,diagonally adjacent shaded cells. The clue cells cannot be shaded.

Shortest Segment

This is a loop variation.

Rules: Draw a single closed loop that passes through all the cells exactly once, without intersecting itself.Numbers outside indicate the lengths of the shortest segment in that direction.

Patapa, Memorized Tapa,Triangular tapa,Pointless Tapa...

Here are six more tapa variations.Patapa is the oldest of these ,almost 1 year.

Patapa: Clues are either standard tapa clues or standard pata clues(inverted). But a clue cannot have some tapa and some pata digits. All digits represent either tapa or pata.Determine what each clue is,and solve.

Memorized tapa: Some regions have a number written in the top-left cell, which means, whenever a shaded cell in this region is adjacent to a shaded cell in a neghbouring region, that neighbouring region should have a block of shaded cells containing that shaded cell and a length equal to the clue.

Grouped dead ends:Some nodes have black dots. All dead-end shaded cells must touch atleast one of these dots.

Triangular tapa:Each small triangle is counted as a unit cell.Numbers indicate sizes of painted cell blocks(there are upto 12 triangles around every small triangle). The no 2x2 square rule works like this : No 2x2 equilateral triangle(side length 2) can have all shaded triangles. Also, no hexagon(6 triangles) can be shaded completely.

Pointless Tapa:If two shaded cells meet at a point, there must be a shaded cell they are both adjacent to.

Kinght's Tour Tapa: A knight is placed in the grid.Shade some cells using regular tapa rules.then start moving the knight such that it visits exactly one unshaded cell in every outlined region, without landing on a clue cell or a shaded cell. Also,it cannot come back to the region where it started.

Pointless tapa modified for uniqueness.

Compound Tapa, Overboard tapa

Three tapa variations...

Compound tapa: Some clues are simple and some are compound. A digit either represents the length of a black cell block as in standard tapa, or ,the total of black cells in multiple blocks. For example, a (3) can mean (3), or (1,2) or (1,1,1).

Overboard tapa: The clues outside indicate one or two blocks of shaded cells in the upto 3 cells touching the clue (if 1,3 is the clue, then the block inside is either 1 or 3 )

Tapa winds: Atleast one digit in every clue cell also indicates the total number of cells shaded in the same way as the lines in a four winds puzzle,in all four directions.

Fillomino

I like using 3s and 1s in fillominos. The logic is forced significantly by these numbers in this fillomino. Thanks to Palmer for testing this one.

Sum Skyscrapers

Rules:Place each digit from 1 to 6 into the grid such that every row/column contains all digits exactly once.Numbers outside indicate the sums of all skyscrapers visible in that direction.

New-style tapa,Pencilmarks Tapa and more

Four tapa variations.

Tapa-two too much: Subtract some values from some(or all) of the digits in some(or all) clues, such that in every horizontal row(containing atleast one clue) ,a total value of 2 is deducted. No clue can be completely reduced to zero, though some digits can become 0.Then solve the resulting tapa.

Pencilmarks Tapa:Some letters are placed as clues. Each letter appears in three places in the grid. Each time,it has a different value(which can be found from the mapping provided).
Tapa fusion: Choose some non-overlapping 2x2 squares(containing atleast one given) and merge the four cells of each of these squares to form single 2x2 clue cells. All clues in those four cells will be merged to make a single clue. For example,if (1,1) and (2,4) are the individual clues, the merged clue will be (1,1,2,4). The resulting grid can contain only the merged 2x2 clues.

New-style tapa: Some tapa-like clues outside the grid indicate the lengths of blocks of diagonally adjacent shaded cells in the corresponding diagonal.

Thursday, October 18, 2012

Skyscrapers

Rules:Place a digit from 1 to 5 in each cell,so that each digit appears exactly once in every row and column. These digits behave like heights of buildings.Numbers outside indicate the number of buildings that are visible in that direction(shorter buildings are blocked by taller ones).Every row and column will have a blank cell.

Polytapa and more..

These four new variations are all based on polyomino tiling, so i chose to group them together in one post.

Polytapa:The tapa wall should be tiled exactly by non-overlapping dominos and triminos .Pieces of the same size cannot touch each other, except diagonally.

Tapa fragments : Use only the given fragments (polyominos),any number of times each, without overlapping, to build the wall. Some clues have letter/s written.Clues which have one or more letters, must be orthogonally adjacent to atleast one fragment of the corresponding shape.Fragements can be rotated/reflected.The example here uses four pentominos

Anuraag's tapa:Locate some polyominos by writing numbers equal to the area of the polyomino. The polyominos should form a single tapa wall without forming 2x2 squares. Two equal-sized polyminos cannot be edge-adjacent with each other.Number/s in a cell indicate/s sum of all numbers(of the same polyomino) touching the cell .The clue will contain multiple numbers for multiple polyminos touching the clue cell.

Tapa in Squares: Follow regular tapa rules.Shaded cells must be tiled by non-overlapping squares 2x2 or larger only. The no 2x2 rule is dropped.

Delta Heterocut

Rules: Divide the grid into polyominos of areas in the given range. If there is a white circle between two cells,it means the cells belong to different polyominos of the same size.A grey circle means the sizes of the two polyominos differ by 1, and a black circle stands for a difference of 2.No two polyominos can be identical, even after rotation/reflection.

Pathbreaking tapa

Rules: Follow regular tapa rules. Then trace a path whose end points are marked as 'P'.The path does not intersect itself, and passes through some of the cells horizontally or vertically. The path cannot pass through the clue cells.Numbers on the left and top indicate how many cells are visited by the path.Numbers on the right and bottom indicate how many shaded cells the path visits.

Taparithmetic

Rules:Follow regular tapa rules.Additionally, sums of numbers in shaded cells are equal across identical outlined regions.

Superimposed tapas

Rules: Two (imagine the paper is transparent) tapas with digital clue digits were exactly overlapped on one another. Some clues are on the same cell in both grids. Some clues are in different cells. If both puzzles have a clue in the same location, those clue will be identical with respect to the number of digits.Zeros are not allowed. Separate the two grids, determine the correct individual clues and solve both puzzles

Circular growth

This is one of my latest inventions.
Shade some cells in a circular way starting from each clue,by choosing one of the upto eight neighbouring cells as the centre of the circle, and moving either clockwise or anti-clockwise, until that many cells are shaded, such that all shaded cells are orthogonally connected in the end.2x2 squares of all shaded cells are not allowed.Every clue should have exactly one circular growth.Circular growths from different clues often overlap. In the end, every shaded cell should belong to atleast one circular growth.

Monday, September 17, 2012

Tapa:Two or less

Rules:Paint some cells black or grey,to create a continuous wall.Number/s in a cell indicate the length of black cell blocks on its neighbouring cells. If there is more than one number in a cell, there must be atleast one white cell between the black cell blocks.Painted cells cannot form a 2x2 square or larger. There are no wall segments on cells containing numbers.
Shaded cells around the clues cannot have more than two shaded edge-adjacent cells.

Yajiline

This is a new yajilin variation in line with my past ideas based on segment lengths. But i didnt apply these ideas on yajilin, before seeing this.
Puzzle modified for uniqueness

Rules:Shade some cells following the clues.Adjacent cells cannot both be shaded. Then draw a single closed loop through all the unshaded cells. The numbers are either the number of shaded cells in the direction of the arrow, or the length of the longest segment in that direction.Sometimes, though not on purpose, the clues might indicate both quantities.

Thermosnake

Rules: Shade some cells to form a snake that does not touch itself, even diagonally. The thermometers must be filled starting in the bulb.Head and tail of the snake are given as black dots.Numbers outside indicate how many cells are shaded in that direction.

Liar calcudoku

This is one of my calcudoku variations.

Rules: Place a digit from 1 to 6 in each cell such that every row and column contains each different digit exactly once.Numbers inside every cage indicate the results of mathematical operations applied on all the digits inside the cage.Every clue is false. It is either one larger or one smaller than the actual values.Determining which operation is used is part of the solve.Subtraction and division work on two digits only.

The colors of tapa

Rules:Paint some cells black or grey,to create a continuous wall.Number/s in a cell indicate the length of black cell blocks on its neighbouring cells. If there is more than one number in a cell, there must be atleast one white cell between the black cell blocks.Painted cells cannot form a 2x2 square or larger. There are no wall segments on cells containing numbers. Numbers are either black or grey. The corresponding shaded cells should be the same color as the clue number is.All shaded cells of one color should be reachable from each other without visiting a cell of the other color enroute.

Tuesday, September 4, 2012

Tapa: Complementary pairs

Rules:Paint some cells black to create a continuous wall.Number/s in a cell indicate the length of black cell blocks on its neighbouring cells. If there is more than one number in a cell, there must be atleast one white cell between the black cell blocks.Painted cells cannot form a 2x2 square or larger. There are no wall segments on cells containing numbers.
Identical cells in every pair of identical outlined regions must one be shaded and the other unshaded. All such pairs of outlined shapes are asymmetrical.
If, for example ,the corner cell of an "L" tetromino is shaded ,then the same cell in the other "L" tetromino must be empty. This applies to all cells of the shape.

Kakuro-style Tapa

This is a Kakuro-style Tapa

Kakuro-style tapa

Rules:Paint some cells black to create a continuous wall.Number/s in a cell indicate the length of black cell blocks on its neighbouring cells. If there is more than one number in a cell, there must be atleast one white cell between the black cell blocks.Painted cells cannot form a 2x2 square or larger. There are no wall segments on cells containing numbers.
Clues in black cells indicate the number of rows of uninterrupted shaded cells in that direction.Every such set of rows should be of different lengths. If a clue contains the number '2' for example, two shaded blocks of different lengths should appear in the correspoding direction.
