Puzzle 277: Complex tapa

Another new variation on tapa. The clues are complex- each clue has two parts, each revealing different types of information.

Rules: Each clue has two parts, one gives the number of blocks around the clue cell, and the other gives the size of the largest block around the clue cell. Determining which number represents which information is part of the solving process.

Puzzle 276: Dotted tapa

Rules: Every third shaded cell (moving horizontally and row by row)contains a dot. The first shaded cell is not dotted. One number in every clue gives the number of dotted cells around the clue cell. The remaining numbers are standard tapa block clues. Identify the locations of dots and solve the tapa.

Puzzle 275: Cipher tapa

Cipher tapa encodes the number of shaded blocks.
Rules: The clue cells are coloured in one of four colors. Each color represents a different number. All clue cells with the same color contain the same number of blocks around that clue.

Puzzle 274: Alien tapa

Tapa got contaminated and as a result, all the clues have half of the meaning changed. While the clues still represent the number of blocks, the digits in a clue now represent the number of dead-end cells in a block, rather than the total size of the block.

Puzzle 270,271: Alternative tapa and symmetric tapa

Rules:
Alternative: In addition to usual rules, for each set of identical letters, only one is visited by the wall and the others are not.
Symmetric: In addition to usual rules, part of wall should have central symmetry inside every largest possible rectangle having a black dot in the centre.

Puzzle 269: Line check tapa

This new variation is more constrained than Tapa Line. Tapa line considers rows of only shaded cells.

Rules: In addition to usual rules, no four cells in a row can be of the same colour( shaded or unshaded).

Puzzle 268: Tapa in Kakuro

When I developed kakuro-style tapa, I was not sure if the title would be a good fit, as it was not exactly modelled on the kakuro theme, the "all different numbers in a row" being the only kakuro element. So, I had to add the word 'style' to the title to indicate a kakuro-like behaviour. This new kakuro adaptation of tapa ,'Tapa in kakuro', attempts to close that gap. Now, the outside ( and inside,if any) clues indicate the sum of 'sizes of blocks', not the number of blocks.
For the record, this takes the number of my tapa variations alone to an astounding 48.

Rules: In addition to regular tapa rules, clues in black cells represent the total number of shaded cells in the corresponding directions. For any direction provided with a clue, all separate blocks of shaded cells must be of different lengths.

Puzzle 267: Pentominous

I just saw a perfect introduction to a nice pentomino variation here. Here is my first attempt. Pretty easy, but it has a nice aesthetic feel.

Puzzle 266: Consistent tapa

Rules: In addition to regular rules, exactly one of the used digits is consistently false, and takes the same actual value at every occurence.

Thursday, September 12, 2013

Puzzle 265: Hex tapa

In addition to usual tapa rules, shaded cells cannot form three hexagons meeting in a point. There are no wall segments on cells containing numbers.

Puzzle 264: Tapa and a half

Another nice variation. The example I am showing here is rather trivial.I am saving the actual tapa for another day. This variation is not trivial at all, and not a combination of two variations either.

Rules: In addition to regular rules, the clues now see upto 12 cells around the clue cell: 8 regular squares plus one orthogonally adjacent square for each of the four squares that are orthogonally adjacent to the clue.

Puzzle 262: Semi-liar masyu

I think this variation can be attributed to Grant Fikes, and I have seen atleast two examples of this type that he wrote.

Rules: In addition to regular masyu rules, half of the circles are lying. The loop has to alternate between a liar and a truthful circle.

Puzzle 260: Boats in tapa

A new variation.
Rules: In addition to regular rules, place some boats in white squares, one in a square. Boats do not touch each other, not even diagonally.Boats cannot be placed in clue squares. Atleast one number in every clue gives the number of boats in its row and column.

Puzzle 259: Disguised tapa

Rules: Follow regular tapa rules. Additionally, some or all of the single-digit clues indicate the number of blocks of shaded squares around the clue square, rather than the length of the block.

Puzzle 258: Excluesive tapa

Another new tapa variation.
Rules:Follow regular Tapa rules. Additionally,no two instances of the same digit(obviously from different clues)share shaded squares.
Note: This is just an example to demonstrate the variation. The aditional constraint does not affect the solve.

Puzzle 256: Wordic tapa

Wordic tapa will also be seen at the TVC. I think the intended logic works well. I had to trade symmetry for uniqueness.
Rules: Follow regular Tapa rules. Additionally, the clues give the number of letters in the word equivalent of actual Tapa clues.

Puzzle 255: Elimination tapa

This variation appears at TVC XIV this weekend. The one on TVC XIV is likely going to be a 15x15.

Tuesday, August 27, 2013

Puzzle 254: Exotapa

Rules: Follow regular tapa rules. Additionally, each clue represents the 8-square ring that surrounds the square 3 diagonal units away from its actual physical location,in the direction indicated by the sign in the corner of the clue square. For example, if a clue is in R1C3 and the sign is in the bottom-right corner of the square, its logical location would be R3C5. Physically, the clues do not move. Like in regular tapa, the clue squares cannot be shaded, and all other white squares can be shaded.

Puzzle 253: Ecotapa

Rules: An amateur tapa designer started with many clues and forgot to erase the bad clues from the tapa. When another designer found the tapa, he removed a few pairs of symmetrical clues and designed a new tapa with them. Identify the removed clues, place each pair in symmetrically opposite shaded cells on the second grid, and solve both tapas.

Puzzle 250: Depleted tapa

Another tapa variation.
Rules: Follow regular tapa rules.Additionally, every clue digit in the given range (1 to 6 in this puzzle) can be used only upto k( 2 times in this puzzle) times. Digits not in the given range are not allowed.

Friday, August 16, 2013

Puzzle 249: Tapa Islands

Rules: Follow regular tapa rules. Additionally, unpainted cells form separate areas surrounded by the wall. Each separate area may contain at most one clue cell. If there is a clue cell in an area, at least one digit should give the size of that area in unit squares.

Puzzle 247: Contoured Road

Double back and masyu work together in this new variation, neither of the two in their classical form. The clues are part of the twist, each representing either the number of masyu circles that can fit inside the corresponding outlined region,or the number of occasions the loop enters the region(or both, in some cases).Unlike masyu, and as in double back, the loop visits all the squares.

Puzzle 242: Sandwich Tapa

Another new tapa variation.I am sure this is the inverse of Not alone tapa.Do comment if you think I am wrong. This one is almost symmetric.

Rules: Standard tapa rules. In addition to that, all circles indicate that the cells containingg them are sandwiced between atleast one pair of oppositely shaded cells(they are sandwiched horizontally or/and vertically). Whenever you see a circle along the edge of the grid, assume that you still need to shade/unshade two cells to form a valid pair around the clue.
